Happy Sunday, Everyone!
I hope everyone is enjoying a wonderful Sunday! I’m still battling a summer cold, and I almost considered skipping this week's post.
However, I decided at the last minute to share my weekly update with you all. This past week, I shared my thoughts on Tom Clavin's Bandit Heaven and highlighted Bandolero! by Arnold Hano for my Friday 56.
When I returned my loan at the library, I stumbled upon two paperback copies of Thomas Berger's Little Big Man in the free section. It's the tie-in for the 1970 film, yet it only bears the original 1964 copyright, with no updated copyright information. I've seen this exact edition listed for sale on various websites, including Goodreads, all incorrectly attribute its publication to 1964. The cover features Dustin Hoffman, the star of the movie adaptation, released December 23, 1970. Thus, I'm guessing this tie-in edition hit the shelves in late 1970 or early 1971.
I also dropped by my local Salvation Army to check for any newly added older hardbacks—and I struck gold! I found a first edition of Charles Portis's True Grit, along with Legend in the Dust (a Double D Western) by Dwight Bennett, and Except for Me and Thee and The Massacre at Fall Creek by Jessamyn West. Additionally, I picked up John Jake's The Kent Chronicles in a set of Volumes 1-7 (The Bastard, The Rebels, The Seekers, The Furies, The Titans, The Warriors, and The Lawless), along with three non-Western hardcovers: The Young Titan by F. Van Wyck Mason, Between the Hills and the Sea by K.B. Gilden, and Genesee Fever by Carl Carmer.
Moreover, I grabbed the 10-cent paperbacks Daughters of the Wild Country by Aola Vandergriff and three Louis L'Amour Westerns: How the West Was Won, Showdown at Yellow Butte, and The Warrior's Path.
Looking ahead to this week, I’ll be reviewing Day of Independence by William W. Johnstone and J.A. Johnstone, either on Wednesday or Thursday. For next Friday's 56, I plan to feature a classic: F. Van Wyck Mason's Blue Hurricane from 1954.
